Objective streamlines NZ's parliament department

Mar 9, 2005: Objective Corporation has beaten intense competition, yet again, to win a contract this time in New Zealand, where its information management tools will be used to control the flow of vital parliamentary documents.

The New Zealand Office of the Clerk in the House of Representatives has chosen Objective to develop a system that can control the select committee process. It will be piloted with two select committees for up to a year, with further rollout planned after that period.Select committees proved support and advice to chairpersons and other members of Parliament on parliamentary procedure. The challenge involves dealing with huge amounts of paper documents, including submissions, reports and correspondence, and making them easily accessible to people when they need it.Andrew Beattie, the Clerk-Assistant for Select Committees, said that the project aims to streamlines the process for everyone involved."Members of Parliament will be able to access documents for their committee electronically, while members of the public will be able to access publicly available select committee information via the Internet."This will significantly reduce the number of paper copies involved and make the overall process a lot more efficient. It will also make public participation in the select committee process much easier."He emphasised the importance of the select committee process as being a key part of New Zealand's Parliamentary system, which needs an information system to support these committees that is thoroughly tested and guarantees security."The Office of the Clerk considered Objective's system would provide the required functionality and be "user-friendly". Given the wide range of people who will be using the system - from members of Parliament to government agencies, commercial organisations and the general public - it is essential that the system is easy for people to access and use."Objective won competition from five finalists out of 23 respondents to the Office of the Clerk's request for information management specialists to step forward.Related Article:
