Adobe applies PDF compliance security

PDF files will be able to be kept more secure now that Adobe has released software that allows users to activate digital rights so that unauthorised users cannot tamper with important documents.

The newly released Adobe LiveCycle Policy Server organisations to apply policies to electronic documents for extra assurances of confidentiality, privacy and accountability inside and outside the firewall.

Joshua Duhl, the research director for IDC, said: "Increasing requirements to meet compliance and regulatory mandates for protecting individual privacy and corporate confidentiality have left organisations with a huge dilemma of determining the best way to control and protect information.

"And, as organisations continue to extend business beyond the network perimeter, they must look for solutions that help them protect data throughout the information lifecycle, as it moves from secure enterprise systems to documents delivered inside and outside the network."

The LiveCycle Policy Server allows users to determine who can view the PDF document, modify, copy, print or even forward it on to somebody else.

It is integrated with the standard LDAP-based (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) authentication and identity management infrastructures for centralised document control.

Ivan Koon, the senior vice president of the Intelligent Documents business unit at Adobe, added: "Privacy and security are high priorities in today's business environment, yet companies often don't take into account the fact that their most sensitive information resides in and is shared via electronic documents.

"Without proper protection of these documents, organisations face serious risks to their financial performance, intellectual property, customer privacy, and more. From bank statements to product plans, access and use must be precisely controlled and monitored. LiveCycle Policy Server helps ensure this information is shared in a more safe and secure manner."

The Policy Server runs on Windows, Red Hat Linux, IBM's AIX and Sun's Solaris, and support for Novell's SuSE Linux and HP-UX will be applied in the first half of this year.
