Sun rises to compliance challenge

Jan 20, 2005: It is only a matter time now before the first court case is launched against an organisation for neglecting compliance requirements imposed by the likes of Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA or SEC 17a-4 but Sun is ready to help save organisations from the possibility of such a trauma.

The Sun Compliance and Content Management Solution, released this week, integrates Sun's storage and compliance products with the Solaris Operating System that includes compliance software from AXS-ONE.

This package will be used to take care of electronic documents inside organisations, including corporate electronic records, emails and instant messages.

This new solution extends Sun's content and compliance offerings, which include the Sun Content Infrastructure System powered by Sun StorEdge SAM-FS, the Sun StorEdge Compliance Archiving System, and its Content and Compliance Solutions Practice.

Ed Valdez, the vice president of Integrated Solutions at Sun Microsystems, said: "In the past few months, complying with government regulations has become a top priority for organisations around the world. Our customers have a critical need to get more out of their information assets and intellectual property while ensuring compliance with the regulations that affect them.

"This solution delivers authentication of our access to corporate information while ensuring maximum security anywhere, anytime and this translates into a real-time business advantage for our customers."

Gartner is keeping track of services provided by vendors, in what it calls the "email active-archiving market". It claims that the focus should be on archiving, indexing, hierarchical storage management and basic records retention management, and applications designed to meet the needs of compliance officers and people who have to produce records for legal discovery requests.

This new solution will also have a single web-based search screen for all records to be found, and it will be compatible with all types of data/records, including documents, databases, ERP and images.

This collaboration between Sun and AXS-One will eventually lead to it taking over from Sun's current email archiving solution, Infinite Mailbox.
