Adaptec, Vitesse make space for better storage

Feb 01, 2005: Customers have been promised more secure RAID systems than ever before in the future, following the announcement that Adaptec and Vitesse have pooled together their resources to develop future storage products which they hope will break barriers.

Vitesse will combine its 6GB/s mixed signal and expander technology and expertise with Adaptec's RAID, RAID 6, and I/O technology and expertise to develop advanced Serial-Attached SCSI products which will allow Adaptec to market, what it considers to be the broadest SAS product lines in the industry.Under the alliance agreement, Vitesse will employ 48 Adaptec engineers and license certain SAS technology and assets related to Adaptec's development of SAS RAID on Chip (ROC) products.Vitesse and Adaptec will supply original equipment manufacturer customers and channel customers with advanced SAS technologies, such as ROC chips (including the management software, firmware, and drivers), expanders, bridges, and I/O silicon.Demetri Christodoulou, the country manager for Adaptec, talked about how significant the alliance would be. "This alliance will mean that will be able to develop high quality products much more quickly. Will pull our engineer expertise together to develop new ISCSI chips and RAID products."We are working on developing a RAID 6 system, to back up data more securely, which has never been done before. At the moment, RAID 5 is the most secure RAID system. We aim to develop higher quality products such as this one to improve the ability of companies to keep their data safe."Christodoulou said that the goal of the alliance is to maintain Adaptec's leadership in Serial-Attached SCSI by empowering its SAS engineering team to leverage complementary technology and expertise in order to deliver the most impressive SAS product line on the market. He believes that this alliance will have a significant impact on its competitors, because of the resources it will pool together to develop new storage products. Related Article:
