Oracle hit by hidden PeopleSoft dispute

Dec 24, 2004: Oracle thought all of its arguing with PeopleSoft was finished just in time for Christmas, until it uncovered another problem which has been going on for a while behind the scenes within the organisation.

The problem was exposed when Charles Phillips, the president of Oracle called Quest, the J.D. Edwards applications user group, to tell the company that Oracle was looking forward to working with its staff.

However, Oracle did not understand that despite PeopleSoft acquiring J.D. Edwards 2 years ago (used for regional user groups) , PeopleSoft preferred to deal with J.D. Edwards because of a rift it had with Quest (which organises the annual user-group conference in Denver).

PeopleSoft did not want anything to do with Quest, because it did not want to manage relationships with a national organisation as well as regional groups.

However, Quest refused to be discounted and told PeopleSoft that it needed to use Quest as an independent user body.

Despite the differences previously experienced between PeopleSoft and Quest, experts say that if J.D. Edwards, PeopleSoft and Quest showed a united front, it could create a very powerful force.

Regardless, any new addition of users to Oracle's membership will be a value boost to the company and the customers too.
