US Aussie technology exports to increase

Nov 8th, 2004: Aussie technology firms are likely to take advantage of the US Federal budget for homeland security once the United States Free Trade Agreement comes into effect, according to Austrade's Regional Director for the Americas, Ian Wing.

The US Federal budget for technology procurement reached nearly US$60 billion in 2005 and more than half of that is expected to be spent on homeland security.

Austrade believes that the Australian technology companies interested in exporting their products and services will be able to take advantage of this sector.

Ian Wing said: "When the Australia United States Free Trade Agreement comes into effect, Australian suppliers will have greater access to these US government procurement opportunities in the Federal, State and Local markets.

"The US Government is the world's largest purchase of technology products and services which presents enormous opportunities for our exporters."

However, Wing is also aware that Australian companies need to learn how to cope with the challenges of doing business with the US government and how the market works over there.

Austrade is arranging seminars to help Australian companies understand the best way to enter the market, which will include experts from the Greater Washington region and Australia to share their knowledge and expertise.

Austrade will hold US Government Procurement Seminars in Melbourne on November 30th, Canberra on December 1st, Sydney on December 3rd, Brisbane on December 7th, Perth on December 9th and Adelaide on December 10th.
