Aussie born SAN Health off to flier

SAN Health, provided by Brocade Communication Systems, has been well received by companies around the world since its conception in Australia, freeing companies up from having to manually optimise and maintain their SANs.

SAN Health automates many time-consuming diagnostic tasks involved with SAN management and maintenance and allows IT staff to identify potential problems and performance bottlenecks before they impact daily operations.

1,000 SAN Health reports have been provided to Brocade partners and SAN users around the world since it was launched last month.

Deb Dutta, the managing director of Brocade Communications Singapore for Asia Pacific/Japan outlined the advantages of this system: "It allows organisations to take care of the health of their SANs used by enterprises or small businesses and make sure that they are correctly configured at all times. SAN Health 2 is now available as a free download from the Brocade.com web site.

"It enables customers not only to visualise what they have at present, but what needs to be done in the future to better manage the SANs. The "What's Your SAN plan?" workshop is also available as part of SAN Health and this helps organisations to create a plan for the future."

SAN Health provides: a snapshot of inventory and switch configuration to help in tracking and documenting the change process and in planning for SAN expansion and upgrades; a detailed point-in-time topology diagram that shows the logical connections of all switches, connected devices, and Inter-Switch Links (ISLs), capturing the current topology and providing historical comparison for tracking and managing change.

In addition, it can capture/display historical performance data to monitor traffic pattern changes over time, assist in troubleshooting, and identify potential problems before they impact operations and recommend best-practice guideline to help optimise SAN performance.

Steve Wynne, the SAN Health creator, developer and technical marketing manager at Brocade Communications Systems said: "SAN Health gives customers a clear inventory of their SAN environment and switch configurations. The software transforms raw diagnostic data into a series of performance graphs and topology diagrams and then checks these results against best practices, allowing organisations to achieve goals through the implementation of solid SAN infrastructures."

"We've found up to 80 percent of systems engineers use SAN Health at least once a month, and a growing number of people use it daily to track changes in their SAN environment. We're really driving SAN Health as an element of our proactive approach to customer care. We want to make customers' lives easier by simplifying their ability to design and manage their SAN infrastructure."

Graham Schultz, the partner manager of Australia and New Zealand at Brocade Communications Systems added: "We also offer our customers a full suite of education services to ensure they receive maximum return on their storage infrastructure investment. In addition, we are also focusing more on the SMB market than ever, as well as enterprises. We are working hard with our OEM partners to set up seminars were we can educate distributors and users on how to make best use of SANs."

Brocade aims to focus more on the small business market through its channel partners to offer its routers, SAN infrastructure devices and SAN support services too, such as SAN Health.
