Brocade brings SANs closer together

Brocade Communications Systems' SilkWorm Multiprotocol SAN Router is now available through OEM partners, EMC, HP and StorageTek to improve SAN infrastructure management by creating greater connectivity and integration.

The Multiprotocol Router is designed to consolidate multi-vendor infrastructures and multi-protocol environments. In addition, it supports secure and selective connectivity between devices in different fabrics without the need to merge SAN networks, which helps the IT managers to cope with technical and organisational obstacles.

It also provides both Fibre Channel-to-Fibre Channel (FC-to-FC) routing, and Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP), for SAN-to-SAN connectivity over Fibre Channel or through the use of IP networks.

Deb Dutta, managing director of Asia Pacific and Japan at Brocade, said: "The Multiprotocol Router is a very compelling solution that reduces capital and operational expenses by allowing the sharing of resources across SAN fabric boundaries.

"This solution also enables new levels of consolidation for enterprises, and we are very pleased that this will be available through our partners EMC, HP and StorageTek."

Frank Harbist, the vice president and general manager of storage infrastructure and software at HP, added: "The technology will serve as a building block for the HP Adaptive Enterprise strategy to synchronise business and IT, thus helping to solve a variety of operational challenges such as tape backup consolidation, and secure, selective data sharing between SAN environments."

JR Roedel, StorageTek senior director of information lifecycle management solutions was also excited about the new release: "With the Silkworm Multiprotocol Router, our customers can maximise the value of their distributed storage resources and achieve a more secure, flexible and functional Inter-San foundation, cost-effectively and non-disruptively."

Chuck Hollis, EMC's vice president of storage platforms marketing, talked about its benefits too: "The Multiprotocol Router integrates seamlessly into our portfolio of leading storage systems and software, and compliments the broadest and deepest set of capabilities across the industry's widest range of tiered storage offerings."
