Sun's First Foray into VTL De-Duplication

April 8, 2008: Sun Microsystems has lifted the lid on a range of upgrades for its Virtual Tape Library (VTL) range including the company's first de-duplication solution.

Announced at the Storage Networking World expo in Oralando, Sun’s new solutions include the brand new StorageTek VTL Plus, expanded capacities for VTL Value and the addition of data de-duplication in VTL Prime. Sun believes that enterprise data is growing exponentially and is highly disperesed, with 50-60% of all data residing in remote offices incapable of proper backup. De-duplication looks to assist with this problem by lowering the cost of physical storage as only unique data is retained.

"Our customers need to store and back-up increasing amounts of data longer with faster recovery periods. The success of our VTL solutions in the market is proof that Sun delivers unmatched value through the combination of industry-leading platforms and high performance storage and compute systems," said David Kenyon, vice-president, product marketing and business operations, Storage Group, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

VTL Prime is the first data de-duplication from Sun and can be used as a stand-alone VTL or implemented with VTL Plus to provide tiered data protection architecture. VTL Prime replicates only the unique data, with common data

The Californian based company has seen a 300% year-on-year growth rate of its VTL products since March 2007 and believes this is set to rise.

"The VTL market is one of the fastest growing segments in the industry today, and customers need highly scalable and innovative solutions that can easily fit into their existing backup processes and infrastructure," said Bernie Wu, vice-president of business development, FalconStor.
