Sun and Fujitsu Expand SPARC Server Line

By Nathan Statz

April 10, 2008: Sun Microsystems and Fujistu have introduced two new servers based on the UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor.

The new enterprise class T5140 and T5240 run on the Solaris 10 operating system and pack dual-socket UltraSPARC T2 processors, which Sun claim beat all x86 systems on enterprise-class applications including Java, ERP, mail and OLTP databases.

“The performance and scalability we've designed into these new multi-socket systems with the UltraSPARC T2 Plus and Solaris is jaw dropping,” said John Fowler, executive vice president, Systems Group, Sun Microsystems. “In just two-and-a-half years we've increased CMT performance by over 5x without sacrificing space or power efficiency. Customers can now scale more with less whether they're developing Web 2.0 services or running classic CRM or ERP.”

The servers allow up to 128 virtual servers per system and are fully supported by both Sun and Fujitsu service organisations.

“The new SPARC Enterprise servers we are announcing today empower organisations to virtualise their computer infrastructures and build highly scalable, highly efficient and robust Internet infrastructures for the delivery of breakthrough web and enterprise services,” said Tatsuo Tomita, corporate senior vice president, Fujitsu Limited.
