Veritas and NetApp improve data recovery

Veritas Software Corp. and Network Appliance inc. have strengthened their alliance to combat EMC by announcing a new version of Veritas' backup and recovery software.

It supports snapshot technology for point-in-time copies on Network Appliances' network-attached storage filers.

Veritas and NetApp cited that users would benefit because of the increased level of integration between the two products and they will not have to use NetApp's proprietary tools to manually create snapshots. This instead will be automated through NetBackup 5.1 and NetBack 5.1 Advanced Client.

NetApp and Veritas said that they joined together in August 2003 because they wanted to develop and deliver integrated solutions to customers through joint sales and marketing, product integration and qualification, and cooperative technical support.

Steve Duplessie, founder and senior analyst at Enterpise Storage Group said. "IT complexity is a real challenge for users today. Tighter collaboration among strategic vendors, rather than vertical integration, is really what IT professionals want in order to increase the return on their IT investment. This deal shows how two market leaders can accomplish something that is not only good for each of them, but for their combined customers as well."

Gary Bloom, chairman, president and CEO of Veritas software added. "Veritas and NetApp have worked together for a number of years to integrate our best-in-class product offerings that support all major Windows, UNIX and Linux platforms."

Dan Warmenhoven, chief executive officer of Network Appliance also said. "We are enthusiastic about our expanded alliance with Veritas and are confident that NetApp and Veritas together offer the best data protection, storage management, and support solutions available."

Some people, however, believe that they joined forces so that they could present a unified front against EMC Corp and its Legato software division because they became quite friendly after EMC acquired Legato for $1.3 billion in July 2003.

The release of NetBackup 5.1 is the first of three projects mapped out for co-development by Veritas and NetApp. Veritas is also planning to integrate management features for NetApp filers into Veritas' Data Lifecycle Manager products. No details have been revealed yet about the third project though.
