Yahoo responds to Sensis with local search

By Stuart Finlayson

Hot on the heels of the launch of Telstra subsidiary Sensis' multi million dollar launch of its search website, Yahoo Australia & New Zealand has introduced a website dedicated to local searches.

The new website (http://localsearch.yahoo.com.au) will allow Australian consumers and businesses to find local business listings and maps.

The move comes just three weeks after Australia's largest telco unveiled its Sensis website, backed by an $8 million marketing campaign.

The competition is stiffening in the local search market, with the aforementioned companies joined by market leader Google and Ninemsn, which is a joint venture between Australia's Nine Network and Microsoft.

Peter Crowe, head of search at Yahoo Australia & NZ, insisted it was demand from its customers rather than any competitor moves that prompted the introduction of the site.

"Having identified that more than 20 percent of yahoo search users are making local search queries, we have responded to consumer demand and created a consumer-focused search service that has been designed with relevancy and comprehensiveness front of mind."

Users visiting the Yahoo Australia & NZ homepage (www.yahoo.com.au) will now find a search window featuring a series of tabs which have been introduced to help users refine their search query. These include web search, image search, news search, and local search. When users click on the local search tab they are presented with two search boxes – one for a business name and the other for a location.
