Taiwan creates faster memory card

Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is aiming to mass produce a new memory card, which can process data much faster than other memory cards.

The "µcard" is planned to be launched at the Taipei International Electronics Show (Taitronics) which starts from October 8-12.

The cards have been designed to transfer 120MB of data per second, which is 10 times faster than Secure Digital (SD) memory cards.

In addition, features will include USB 2.0 compatibility, low power, fast I/O and the ability to interface with other memory cards.

The cards will be targetted at PCs, handsets, digital still cameras, digital video recorders and MP3 players.

However, some critics believe that the major camera manufacturers will not use these cards in the near future because these players have already invested so much in other formats.
