Sony chases compliance blues away

Sony Australia is set to release its blue laser-based ProDATA discs next month to solve the compliance storage problems faced in medical imaging, email archival, enterprise content management.

In addition, it enhances the storage capabilities for multimedia projects, graphic design and audio/video editing/authoring.

Sony promises that these discs will equip businesses for a new era of data storage and backup.

They can hold up to 23GB in capacity per disc and are being touted as having the ability to offer high performance, high capacity and write-once capabilities necessary for regulatory data retention.

Peter Norman, the product marketing manager of Sony Australia's business solutions division said: "It's a natural progression for companies that have outgrown 9GB Magneto Optical (MO) technology, including those in the healthcare, telecommunications, insurance, government, legal and financial industries.

"Blue laser optical storage technologies, such as ProDATA, are designed to overcome the capacity and performance limitations of current professional disc storage formats. The advanced imaging and editing requirements of broadcast and medical companies will particularly benefit from the 23GB capacity of ProDATA."

Three models will be offered - an internal SCSI, and external SCSI and an external USB2.0 version. The ProDATA media also has an archival life up to 50 years.

However, despite this disc being geared towards compliance requirements, some analysts do not believe that many organisations in Australia will seriously think about compliance risks for the next 18 months because action by directors on boards will only be taken once somebody is sent to prison for failing to obey regulations.

Analysts believe that as soon as one company falls foul, it is believed that there will a sudden rush towards acquiring compliance tools and methods.
