IBM reveal new Web 2.0 Servers

April 24, 2008: IBM has peeled back the covers on a new category of servers which are designed for Web 2.0 computing.

Web 2.0 is a term that’s bandied around to cover a whole range of technologies, but at its heart is collaboration and facilitating user involvement in information sharing. The server team at IBM is looking to give the hardware powering Web 2.0 technologies a shot in the arm with the new iDataPlex system line.

The iDataPlex more than doubles the amount of systems that can run in an IBM rack and uses 40% less power than its predecessors while increasing computer output by five fold.

"With iDataPlex, IBM is making Web 2.0-style computing more efficient and commercializing it for Internet companies and other high performance segments like financial services and research," said Bill Zeitler, senior vice president of IBM Systems and Technology Group. "iDataPlex can provide a foundation that companies can build on to provide improved services to Web users around the world."

Big Blue's shiny new servers are built for stateless computing that can turn many seperate computers into a pool of shared resources or "cloud"much like how the internet itself is modeled.

The new iDataPlex line is scheduled for release in the US and Canada in June, with a global release penciled in for later this year.
