IBM, Veritas prepare for mass migration

IBM and Veritas are in the process of restructuring their storage offerings in preparation of a massive migration to upgraded applications by enterprises in the near future.

They are looking to add enhanced virtualisation and replication technology to help these enterprises to improve their storage infrastructures.

The aim is to allow users to streamline system consolidation, attach bigger capacity and cope with compliance issues far more easily.

IBM will expand its TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller so that it will be able to move data among other devices as well as IBM systems, such as EMC's disk arrays.

Future enhancements to the SVC will bridge islands of SANs to help customers with migrations to isolated locations.

As for Veritas, it will combine its Upscale virtualisation technology, which it has embraced from the acquisition of Ejascent Inc., with the Veritas Cluster Server. This will allow data to be transported from one application to another without any disruptions.

Other improvements will allow users to monitor, track and collect information on application performance, and report data across servers, operating systems, databases and devices in a centralised environment.

Many companies are expected to carry out migrations next year because many applications will reach the end of their lifespan, so IBM and Veritas hope that their changes will make this process significantly less stressful.
