IBM modernises ATO tax system

IBM has signed a 14.3 million deal with the Australian Tax Office to provide the technology behind the Change Program, which encourages more people to meet their tax responsibilities online.

IBM will assist the ATO with its goal of replacing and modernising its existing tax business systems by supporting the Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) to activate the Change Program.

The SOA aims to interconnect and integrate the ATO's web-based systems, commercial off-the-shelf software and legacy applications.

Tony Best, general manager of the public sector at IBM Australia said. "The ATO contract reinforces IBM's commitment to deliver innovative solutions that assist our government clients to deliver a better service to the Australian public.

"IBM will provide the Australian Taxation Office with a more integrated software environment to allow the new tax applications to be developed on the mainframe platform. This will ensure a more reliable and durable processing environment for the implementation of the Change Program."

WebSphere messaging and workflow technology will be used to support the business processes of ATO employees and systems.

The DB2 document, content and records management software will automate information management and archiving, needed for a content-heavy business environment.
