IBM releases new super server
IBM have released the first server in the industry to feature virtualisation engine technology and the Power5 processor, which can run 10 operating systems on one single machine.
The new eServer i5 is designed for small and medium sized businesses to free up their workload by allowing systems to be automated from a single point.
Powered by POWER5 microprocessors, can run multiple operating systems simultaneously, including i5/OS, Windows, Linux and AIX 5L. The eServer i5 has the ability to run AIX 5L alongside i5/OS to consolidate and manage UNIX solutions.
Sam McClusky, the IBM eServer iSeries product manager for IBM, explained what the advantages of this new server will mean to small and medium sized businesses."This new server will greatly simplify the infrastructure of businesses and allow tasks to be managed much more easily. The software and hardware will be integrated and managed more effectively, releasing the workload of employees so more time can be spent focusing on other important areas.
"Businesses using the i5 server can average up to a 40 percent improvement in system price and performance over previous iSeries systems."
Roxanne Reynolds-Liar, CIO of the Fashion Institute of design and merchandising said they will use iServer i5 to run its core business applications (student database, financials, intranets, Notes email), and its various websites. Other applications currently being developed include a job search engine and online stores, such as a museum shop.
"FIDM is growing rapidly and we are keenly interested in the new line of eServer i5 systems with POWER5 and the added capabilities it offers. We expect it will meet and exceed the demands of our dynamic operating environment and rapid growth while giving us the most innovative hardware and software solutions available."
This new release fits into IBM's overall "On Demand" strategy, which has the vision of incorporating increased flexibility into businesses. The three main goals of this vision are to introduce virtualisation, automation and integration. The eServer i5 series is a test trial which embodies these objectives.
