Tassie leads Australia with new e-government site
The Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts has granted the Tasmanian government with the first online site in Australia to provide more transparent information about council performances in a State or Territory jurisdiction.
The CouncilsatWork website will reveal information about key performance indicators to the public and councils. It will provide a snapshot of how a council is performing across areas, such as governance, finance, human resource management, information systems management, community health and safety, planning and development, social and community services and recreational and cultural facilities.
The website was developed by the Local Government Association of Tasmania as part of the Local Government Online Services Project (LOGONS), funded through the Australian government's Networking the Nation programme's $45 million local government fund. This is one of 18 projects being funded under LOGONS.
The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts said. "The website also encourages greater levels of transparency and accountability for local government. And its ease of use and access will improve the public's understanding of local government and encourage citizens to participate in council decision-making processes."
The Australian government is working on other initiatives to deliver better e-government and encourage more involvement from the public.
These include:
* Revealing principles to guide agencies in the development of service improvements.
* Release of technical and non-technical standards to reduce confusion in implementing service improvements.
* Testing of new technologies to support improved integration of services across jurisdictions.
* Addressing trust and security.
The LOGONS Project aims to provide customers with online local government services, 24 hours a day, seven days a week and create a single entry point for Tasmanian local councils.
It is hoped that customers will be able to access council services at a central location and all councils will be able to offer sophisticated online transactions regardless of their size, location or resources.
