Hitachi releases robust drives for mobile workers

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has released the new Travelstar 4K40 to increase reliability, strength and efficiency for hard drives in laptops, to help fulfil the needs of an increasingly mobile generation who need to protect their data.

Hitachi is looking beyond capacity for the time being, having established itself as a leader in 2.5-inch technology, so it can focus on providing enhancements to the actual drives.

The advantages of the new 40 GB drive is that the new single-disk design decreases the number of components used; it can withstand much rougher handling; it includes double the industry standard specifications for load/unload cycles, meaning the number of times the read/write head can move on and off the media without failure has increased to 600,000 times.

In addition, the actuator arm that carries the read/write components has reduced the chance of data loss from arm/disk contact.

Bob Holleran, general manager of 2.5-inch and 1.8-inch HDDs, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies believes that this kind of strength in drives is exactly what customers are looking for. "We've painstakingly manipulated every possible feature on the new Travelstar to boost reliability while maintaining the sweet spot at 40 GB. We are in the enviable position of having a stable and proven design, which allows us to invest time fine-tuning the product to customer specification."

Evidence provided by the IDC reports that growing numbers of consumers and corporate users are choosing to use laptops over desktops because of the need for greater mobility, and this is why the notebook hard drive is becoming so important.

The IDC January 2004 report revealed that portables PCs grew by 27.4 percent in 2003 while desktop PCs grew by only 6.7 percent. It also concluded that the demand for 2.4-inch hard drives would increase from 47 million in 2003 to more than 58 million in 2004, due to the desire for greater wireless mobility.

The Travelstar 4K40, is available in 20, 30 and 40 GB capacities, with 4,200 rpms.
