Fujitsu improves hard disks worldwide

Fujitsu has made one of the world's smallest, fastest and most efficient hard disk drives available in the world.

This will enable innovation and improvements in everything from laptop and notebook computers, to other platforms and applications.

The MHT-BG will become the first hard disk drive vendor in the world to deliver the power of the integrated Serial ATA SOC in a 2.5" form factor. It will also feature Native Command Queuing, which can intelligently and simultaneously coordinate up to 32 instructions queued and recorded by the hard disk controller, contributing to a significant improvement in overall hard disk drive performance.

Joel Hagberg, Vice President of Marketing at Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. is very pleased that Fujitsu can deliver yet another industry-first: "Fujitsu's hard disk drive technology enables the introduction of the native Serial ATA II interface into new notebook systems, with better performance, improved value and years of exciting product development."

The Fujitsu MHT-BH was developed with the support of Marvell Semiconductor. Their single chip Serial ATA SOC eliminates the need for a bridge chip. The benefit of this means that it provides a Serial ATA interface and a price point that rivals traditional parallel ATA products.

Dr Alan Armstrong, Marvell's Vice President of Marketing for the Storage Business Group said that Marvell is excited to join Fujitsu in this venture: "We are pleased that we could bring the performance and innovation inherent in the Marvell 88i6535 SOC to Fujitsu's long legacy of technical HDD superiority, in a manner that will serve customers and raise the bar for the entire HDD industry."

This new product will make it easier to handle the increasing powerful data-processing capabilities in mobile computing products.

With a world-class data density of 10.7 gigabits per square centimetre (or 69 gigabits per square inch), the drive is available in 40,60, and 80GB capacities to suit a range of customer needs.

Fujitsu will begin sample shipments at the end of April.
