Exabyte in FireWire first

Tape backup system vendor Exabyte has introduced what it claims is the first and only tape autoloader on the market that features FireWire 800 connectivity in a 1U form factor.

The company heralded the VXA-2 PacketLoader 1x10 1U as a breakthrough storage solution because it provides two weeks of unattended backup (up to 1.6 TB of capacity in ten 160 GB cartridges) and includes a rack mount kit, cables, backup software and a cleaning tape at a price lower than many standalone tape drives.

With the company choosing the 2004 Macworld event to launch the product, Exabyte was keen to talk up the benefits of the new hardware to Mac users. According to Exabyte, the Apple Xserve and VXA-2 PacketLoader are perfect complements that provide a complete storage solution for Mac users with intensive data storage needs. By simply connecting one FireWire 800 cable from the back of the Xserve to the back of the VXA-2 PacketLoader, Mac users achieve an instant backup solution for their Xserve that provides automated backup and restore for their data.

“The VXA-2 PacketLoader 1x10 1U with FireWire 800 is a landmark product for the Mac market, making tape automation affordable for Mac users and opening the door to unattended backup for thousands of Mac users who have growing data backup needs - particularly Xserve customers,” said Tom Ward, President and CEO of Exabyte. “This autoloader also sets new standards for capacity, speed and price without compromising the high standard of data reliability that Mac users expect from Exabyte storage products.”
