Windows 7 Date Set for 2010

By Greg McNevin

March 17, 2008: With public and industry confidence in Windows Vista seemingly soaring like a terracotta gargoyle, attention is continuing to shift to is successor, currently codenamed Windows 7, which Microsoft has now confirmed will be with us sometime during 2010.

Vista’s increasingly lacklustre reception has put the fire under Microsoft of late, with the company recently announcing a round of hefty price cuts across the range, but even as it does many seem to be looking forward to Windows 7 already, despite little being known about the new OS.

What is known is that it is being based of a completely stripped down and re-vamped “MinWin” kernel that will be tightly knit with its Windows Live services.

While there was some rumours circulating late last year that Microsoft would be releasing Windows 7 in early 2009, while speaking with Softpedia.com last week the company said that it will deliver Windows 7 around three-years after the consumer launch of Vista.

“We are currently in the planning stages for Windows 7 and development is scoped to three years from Windows Vista Consumer GA. The specific release date will be determined once the company meets its quality bar for release,” said Microsoft in a statement.

This would put the final build at release sometime in 2010, hardly too soon for some customers.
