Sun Launches SMB Open Source Initiative

By Greg McNevin

March 20, 2008: Following its recent release of its StorageTeck code to the open source community, Sun has delved deeper into the world of open source and begun to offer complete open source solutions to small to medium businesses (SMBs).

The company says that its new SMB initiative makes it easy and affordable for smaller firms to deploy its open source solutions and tackle common technology problems while increasing productivity and reduce costs.

Sun is pitching its enterprise class solutions at SMBs that want IT to scale with their growing business demands, and include offerings designed to help customers run their systems more efficiently, manage and upgrade email and protect data.

The company has partnered with Microsoft, Intel and AMD to deliver solutions spanning the five S’s, namely: servers, storage, software, services and support. The platforms offered include Sun Fire x64 and UltraSPARC-processor based servers and storage, multiple operating systems (Solaris 10 Operating System, Windows and Linux), and leading databases including Sun's world beating MySQL.

“Sun is making it easier, faster and more cost-effective for SMBs to use technology to gain a competitive advantage,” says Lisa Sieker, vice president of SMB Systems Marketing, Sun Microsystems.

“With energy-efficient, multi-platform systems coupled with free and open source software, Sun is removing the barriers to highly reliable and scalable computing for businesses of any size.”
