Dell to appoint new storage chief

Dell has confirmed that Compaq veteran Darren Thomas is to head up the company's storage division.

Thomas, who worked at Compaq for more than a decade and held various positions within the company's storage division, will report to Jeff Clarke and John Medica, while former head of storage Russ Holt, will become co-vice president of enterprise engineering.

While still a small player in the storage market, Dell has targeted the sector for growth, a move which is starting to pay dividends, its storage systems revenue having grown by 46 percent in the last quarter. Thomas will be charged with maintaining this momentum.

Dell partners with EMC in the development of high-end SANs, and also manufactures its own PowerVault storage systems for smaller implementations.
