Gartner report puts Symantec at top of security pile
A new report issued by analyst group Gartner Dataquest has confirmed Symantec's position as the number one security software provider, based on license revenue in 2002.
The 'Worldwide 2002 Security Software Market and Vendor Shares' report said Symantec increased its worldwide market share in security software in 2002 to 19.4 percent, up from 15.1 percent in 2001, when it also led the field.
Network Associates remain Symantec's closest rivals, with its worldwide market share standing at 10.3 percent, slightly down on the 10.7 percent it grabbed in 2001. Lying in third is IBM, with a 9.5 percent share of the market, also slightly down from the 10 percent share it enjoyed in 2001. Despite both NetApp's and IBM's market share being down, they both experienced growth, as a result of a nine percent growth in the market overall.
The figures mean that Symatec has extended its lead over its nearest rival to more than nine percent, a significant leap from 2001 when its lead was less than five percent. This helped Symantec achieve a year-on-year growth of 40 percent, over four times the growth rate of the security industry as a whole.
"The most significant aspect of this report shows that Symantec's market share continues to grow at a steady rate and outpace the industry as a whole," said John Schwarz, president and chief operating officer, Symantec. "Blended attacks such as SQL Slammer and Bugbear will become more frequent and severe as the time between vulnerability identification and exploitation becomes progressively shorter and shorter. To ward off future cyber threats, customers are adopting an integrated set of security solutions that operate at the gateway, server and client levels. Symantec is the only provider that offers a complete integrated alerting, internet posting, customer response and service management solution for the enterprise user."
