Symantec's three-pronged assault on unlawful entry
Network security vendor Symantec has introduced three new products designed to alert the user when their system is being attacked in order to minimise damage.
First up is the Symantec Decoy Server, a "honeypot" intrusion detection system (IDS) that detects, contains and monitors unauthorised access and system misuse as it happens. As a complement to host - and network - based IDS, Symantec Decoy Server diverts attacks from key resources while also providing early detection of internal and externalattacks.
"Honeypots supplement security solutions such as firewalls and other intrusion detection systems, providing advanced decoy technology and early detection sensors. In addition to the forensic elements, honeypots can be used as a tool for reducing false positives," says Charles Kolodgy, research director for security products at analyst group IDC.
Secondly, the company announced the release of Symantec Host IDS 4.1, providing scalable intrusion detection and prevention capabilities for business critical servers. Symantec Host IDS helps ensure business continuity by providing intrusion detection and prevention with the advanced management capabilities administrators require.
"Corporates are demanding broad platform support, non-intrusive agents and intrusion prevention from their host-based intrusion detection deployments," according to John Donovan, Symantec's Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand. "Symantec Host IDS is designed to safeguard enterprise servers from a variety of threats, utilising new process management capabilities and real-time intrusion detection and new proactive intrusion prevention."
Making up the triumvirate of new products released is Symantec ManHunt 3.0, whichprovides multi-gigabit network intrusion detection, real-time threat analysis, and proactive prevention and response capabilities to protect organisations against emerging threats and denial-of-service attacks.
"Symantec's intrusion detection technologies provide a sophisticated solution that can outpace new and emerging security threats to protect critical business assets," adds Donovan. "Symantec ManHunt offers one of the fastest and most comprehensive network intrusion detection solutions available with flexible deployment options that help reduce total cost ownership for an enterprise."
