Australians hit the Cambodian BI spot

November/December Edition, 2007: Cambodia will soon receive a self-service Business Intelligence (BI) programme, provided through the United Nations Development Organisation.

Supplied by Australian company Space Time Research, Cambodia will receive a SuperSTAR software package for its National Institute of Statistics. It’s a move that will see the statistics agency empowered with tools for data analysis of topics like agriculture, education, healthcare and population census, ultimately allowing the developing country to obtain better information on social, education and economic issues.

Andrew Pinny a UNDP Statistic Advisor says the UN agency aims to draw on a country’s own people and skills alongside a range of partners to find solutions to development challenges. “Providing this leading analysis and dissemination tool will allow them to explore creative solutions to their humanitarian and economic challenges,” he says.

According to John Ellenberger, general manager of marketing at Space-Time Research the software package proves an extremely valuable resource for developmental planning. “When you look at the population census it’s an extremely valuable survey of the whole country and being able to access that data can provide a lot of information for social planning. You can look at areas in need and provide better plans for things like infrastructure, schools and hospitals,” he says.

Another important factor is that the package provides ‘self-service BI’ meaning it allows end-users to access data for ad hoc analysis as well as structured reports. With minimal expertise required to use the software package, Ellenberger says the software’s simple functionality will be the key to its success in supporting the Cambodian National Institute of Statistics.
