Google Releases New Version of its Hosted Applications Suite

Month Date, 2008: Google has just announced the release of Google Applications Team Edition, a new version of its online suite.

The company whose name has become synonymous with internet searching has just announced the release of Google Applications Team Edition, which will be available for free download. One of the features included in Team Edition is the ability to invite others to collaborate and share documents, requiring only a verified business or school email address. “It is aimed at employees who are interested in using Google Apps but whose employers haven't signed up for it,” Rajen Sheth, Google Apps senior product manager told The New York Times.

The hosted application suite will include Google Docs, Calender, Talk and the start page for collaboration content. Google is also allowing users who benefit from the software to upgrade to the more powerful versions, such as Standard, Premier or Education edition.

“More than half a million businesses have already chosen Google Apps to collaborate and share information across the organization,” said Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of enterprise, Google. “With Team Edition, groups of individuals at school or work can just as easily get the benefits of Google Apps by simply signing up online.”

It’s unclear whether Google’s latest push into the online applications market will gain it any more ground against competitors like Microsoft, though the action is unlikely to go unnoticed.
