Department of Foreign Affairs Opengear’s it’s Global Monitoring Network

Month Date, 2008: Remote monitoring provider, Opengear have scored a major contract with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to provide console servers for use at all Australian posts overseas.

When you’re a government agency responsible for advancing the national interest, security and prosperity, the need for a global monitoring solution is reasonably high and a lucrative deal for any vendor to land, which is exactly what Opengear has done.

“By providing a system where server, network and telecommunications issues can be dealt with remotely from one location’s systems, administrators can now avoid much of the cost associated with sending technicians to individual sites. This can be of particular importance when you are dealing with a worldwide network like DFAT’s,” said Waldie.

The deal will see the existing crop of Opengear CM4116 console servers installed in eight sites being increased to over two hundred by the end of 2011. Opengear are claiming that it’s the first central management of distributed IT infrastructure over IP used by the department.

“For DFAT, the CM4116 console managers will mainly be providing secure access and management of network infrastructure such as routers, switches, PBXs and communications connections,” said Bob Waldie, CEO at Opengear.
