New Telco for APAC

New Telco for APAC

By Greg McNevin

January 10, 2008: The recently merged regional telecoms Pacific Internet and Asia Netcom have announced that they will be operating under the name Pacnet.

Asia Netcom's has traditionally serviced the large enterprise and government market, while Pacific Internet focussed on SMB and mid-market customers. The new brand combines the two’s small and large business services, with the one complimenting the other perfectly and covering ADSL internet connections, virtual private networks, and wholesale capacity for other carriers.

“This will be a positive change - we'll be a bigger company with more in-depth market coverage. And with 170 staff around the country we'll be strong competition for the other telcos in the Australian market,” said Pacific Internet's Australian managing director, Dennis Muscat.

“The Australian market is consolidating and you've got to be more competitive. This is an example where we are strengthened by having complementary businesses.”

Pacnet's combined assets include a 10.24 Tbps 36,800km EAC-C2C cable network that connects Singapore, China, the Philippines, Korea and Japan. While it is not utilising its capacity, Pacnet says that it will be upgrading its network and has also indicated that it has plans in the pipeline for a new Trans-Pacific cable.
