HP Announces New Virtualisation Solutions

September 3, 2008: HP is encouraging CIO’s to rethink virtualisation, and has announced new products and services to simplify both its implementation and management.

According to new global research conducted by Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates in August on behalf of HP, while 86 percent of technology decision makers have implemented virtualisation projects, the vast majority expect to have virtualised just 25 percent of their environments by 2010.

Furthermore, while many of those surveyed anticipate eventually reaching a total of 75 percent virtualisation, only one-third recognise virtualisation as a valuable business tool. Rather, two-thirds of see it as a “technology enabler”.

“Virtualisation is a powerful step in transforming IT,” said Ann Livermore, executive vice president, Technology Solutions Group, HP. “To do it right means successfully managing and automating mixed physical and virtual environments. HP delivers the industry’s broadest portfolio for virtualised environments, covering applications and operations management, infrastructure and client architectures.”

HP’s says its new offerings support business needs that span the desktop to the data centre and are designed around three specific areas: applications and operations management, overcoming infrastructure barriers, and maximising client architectures.

Specifically, the company’s Business Service Management (BSM) and IT Service Management (ITSM) solutions have been enhanced with new virtualisation monitoring and support capabilities, new virtualisation-native hardware such as the ProLiant BL495c virtualization blade has been introduced to eliminate virtualisation performance bottlenecks, and a range of new thin clients have been rolled out.

HP says that these new products and services are focused on lowering operational cost, mitigating the risk of a heterogeneous environment and freeing resources to deliver new business services.
