HP Launches SAN Virtualisation

November 7, 2008: With a view to improving productivity while lowering the cost of virtual infrastructure, HP has launched a new storage-area network (SAN) virtualisation platform that pools capacity across both HP and non-HP hardware.

HP says the new StorageWorks SAN Virtualisation Services Platform (SVSP) improves the efficiency and simplifies the management of heterogeneous midrange storage arrays.

The solution is a network-based storage platform that pools capacity while working with HP’s StorageWorks Modular Smart Array (MSA), the StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA), and a number of third-party arrays to centralise the management of a virtualised SAN environment.

HP says that as a result, enterprise customers deploying Fibre Channel SANs are able to significantly simplify operations and improve overall productivity thanks to features such as online data migration, thin provisioning and data replication.

“With the introduction of the SVSP, HP is bringing to market an easy-to-use and affordable virtualisation solution,” said Rich Baldwin, chief executive officer of HP channel partner Nth Generation Computing. “Our customers benefit from the ability to virtualise their entire SAN and manage multiple storage resources with a single solution.

“Complex operations such as data migrations in a multivendor environment and remote replication are accomplished easily and efficiently.”
