Sun Updates StarOffice

By Greg McNevin

November 18 2008: Hot on the heels of version 3.0 of OpenOffice.org, Sun has announced a significant update to its StarOffice suite, adding, among other features, support for Microsoft’s OpenXML format.

StarOffice is based of the same code as OpenOffice 3.0, so the two share many features. With this version of StarOffice comes support for Apple’s OS X operating system alongside the OpenXML support.

It also offers better PDF capabilities, and an extension for Mozilla’s Thunderbird called lightening that will give StarOffice users email, calendaring and scheduling functions on a similar level to that offered by Microsoft Office.

More interesting though, is the news that Sun is toiling on an online version of StarOffice to give it a toehold in the online productivity application space currently inhabited by the likes of Google, Zoho Office and a number of other players.
