Burkert bounces back with ShadowProtect

May 7, 2009:Fernando Aguero believes he may owe his job to the effectiveness of StorageCraft’s disk-based real time recovery and data protection, ShadowProtect.

As Regional IT & T Manager, Pacific, for Sydney-based Bürkert Fluid Control Systems, he was in New Zealand when he discovered that the group’s main server had crashed. He was able to talk the company’s Chief Finance Officer in Sydney through the process of using ShadowProtect to restore the crashed machine. This took just 20 minutes.

“I now swear by ShadowProtect. It could possibly have saved my job,” said Fernando.

He added: “These things always seem to happen when I’m not on-site! But the fact that I was able to talk a non tech-savvy person through the boot-up procedure to restore a domain control says a lot for ShadowProtect.”

The first sign of a problem struck Fernando when network users began complaining of problems. Once he realised the severity of the issue and took into consideration that he was not on-site, he decided that a ShadowProtect System Restore would save all troubleshooting and repair time. Within an hour, all users were reporting that their systems were up and running.

“The restore process took less than 20 minutes,” said Fernando. “ShadowProtect exceeded our expectations by several hundred per cent.”

“Also, recently I restored two Exchange mailboxes. After attending the SP-201 advanced course, this was a walk in the park!”

Bürkert Fluid Control Systems has 12 ShadowProtect Server licences for its ANZ operations, each backing up every hour between 6am and 6pm on working days with full backups performed on weekends. ShadowProtect Desktop backs up staff laptops to their own external USB drives, or to a shared network. This backs up 2.5TB of information to an Intel Netserver NAS device.

A full backup of the 200GB on the company’s file server takes about 1- 2 hours. Incremental backups take about 20 seconds.

Fernando Aguero recalls that when he first joined the company there were data security problems and the backup and restore solution was unstable.

He says. “They used a combination of two different products Computer Associates’ ARCserve and Symantec Backup Exec. One was backing up to a tape drive and the other backing up intermittently to a network share. Essentially they were not working very well. Usually restores didn’t work, even though the backups were saying they were OK.”

Bürkert’s outsourced IT company, Tech Patrol, recommended ShadowProtect, which Fernando bought after seeing a demonstration. He finds it fast and reliable.

Bürkert Fluid Control Systems (www.burkert.com) has delivered German manufactured fluid control products to Australia for more than 25 years.
