BitMicro Rolls out 1.6TB FC SSDs

By Greg McNevin

November 14, 2007: With SSDs finally making their way into notebooks and new breakthroughs being announced every week, the solid state disk (SSD) enterprise market is also picking up steam, with BitMicro announcing the addition of a new 4Gbit Fibre Channel SSD.

Called the E-Disk Altima 4-Gbit, BitMicro says this new SSD provides high-bandwidth storage performance for enterprises handling volume data transfer applications, such as streaming video on demand, medical imaging, data mining, data warehousing and online transaction processing.

BitMicro says the Altima is expected to take full advantage of 4Gbit Fibre Channel technology, delivering sustained rates of more than 230 MB per second and upwards of 55,000 I/O operations per second.

Next to speed, the company says the Altima delivers a record-breaking storage capacity of up to 1.6 terabytes, providing enterprises with both transaction speed and raw storage space. The disk is also is fully compatible with older 1 Gbit and 2 Gbit Fibre Channel devices.

“These [Altima flash SSDs] will benefit enterprise users who need to beef up their networked storage systems with the fastest, densest, and most reliable solid state disks,” said Rudy Bruce, Executive VP for Marketing and Sales and CMO at BiTMICRO Networks.

Bruce adds that the Altima also helps protect IT investments as its backwards compatibility “eliminates the need for collateral upgrades.”

The drive will range from 16GB to 1.6TB in capacity, and will begin volume shipping in Q2 2008.
