Teradata Breaks Free
October 2, 2007: Teradata has completed its split from NCR and today announced it will operate globally as an independent entity and be known locally as Teradata Australia.
Along with their new found freedom, Teradata has also unveiled their new logo and branding strategy. The move is expected to strengthen the Teradata position in the increasingly competitive data warehousing market.
In a statement released over night, NCR CEO Bill Nuti says the spin off of the Teradata datawarehousing business will allow NCR to now focus on its role of providing customer interaction and point-of-service kiosks.
“I am extremely grateful for the tremendous efforts all of our employees have made over the past nine months to realize this momentous event,” said Nuti. “As Teradata moves forward as an independent company, we wish the talented Teradata team all the best as they continue to build on their position as a global leader in the enterprise data warehousing market.
The Teradata/NCR relationship has always been one of extremes. With Teradata primarily focusing on the enterprise data warehousing and analytics space, NCR sits on an entirely different platform, supporting the ‘self service market’ such as teller machines, retail point-of-sale and self-checkout systems.
Having little in common means both Teradata and NCR share a minimal customer base, potentially making it difficult for NCR to cross-sell their vastly different product offerings. Back in January when the original plans for the split were announced, Nuti said, “Teradata and the new NCR operate in deifferent markets, each with solid prospects for the future, but they have markedly different business models.”
Teradata is now trading on the New York Stock Exchange as ‘TDC.’
