Dell and CommVault Team for Data Protection

October 23, 2007: CommVault and Dell will be teaming up to deliver the Simpana 7.0 software suite and expanded Data Protection, Replication and Archiving capabilities to OEMs.

The two say that by working together they will be able to offer a unique approach to archiving and data protection, with CommVault handling data management and Dell taking care of storage.

The new solution includes new features such as Single Instance Store (SIS), optimised 64-bit integration and support for the latest Microsoft advanced platform capabilities, as well as the ability to discover enterprise information across all tiers of storage.

The duo claim that SIS ensures that redundant data is only stored once across the backup and archive tiers, increasing disk utilisation and decreasing recovery times, while built-in Microsoft 2007 Migration aids in the accelerated adoption of 64-bit technology and retain the ability to recover previous versions of Microsoft files, messages and emails.

Next to these two features, the company claims it can simplify the discovery of data across tiers with the new embedded content indexing and search functions in Simpana 7.0. CommVault says the software enables discovery, compliance, legal and discovery search with the ability to perform keyword search of indexed data in files, emails and attachments to emails.

All up, Dell’s Praveen Asthana, Director of Storage Worldwide Marketing, claims that the relationship with CommVault supports the company’s ability to simplify end-user environments.

“In addition to a host of new features and functionality, CommVault Simpana 7.0 software allows customers to implement data de-duplication to greatly improve backup-to-disk efficiency,” said Asthana.
