Transcend Releases SSDs

By Greg McNevin

October 23, 2007: As the SSD market ramps up more and more companies are getting in on the action. Data storage specialist Transcend has become the latest firm to announced the arrival of a range of SATA solid state drives (SSDs).

Trascend says the 2.5-inch drive can be used in most notebooks and desktop PCs, however, it differs from its peers and other magnetic drives in two main ways. Firstly the drive is a slender 9.5mm thick, and secondly it has built-in ECC (error correction code) functionality that Transcend claims ensures reliable data transfers and increases its overall integrity.

Like other SSDs it also features built-in wear leveling technology to lengthen its lifespan and data-retention durability during extended use.

The SSD is currently available in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB flavours for between US$239 (AU$266) and US$376 (AU$419).
