You’re not alone – the majority of people use email for communications of course (it’s the de facto standard), but also as a collaboration tool. Microsoft Outlook is now also the accidental storage system – a vast amount of an organisation’s knowledge resides in individual users’ inboxes.

A new, vastly updated version of the international records management standard, ISO15489, is due to be released at a big gathering of world standards makers in Wellington, in the first week of May.  The gathering will be the annual meeting of the International Standards Organisation’s Technical Committee for information and documentation, TC46.

Workers wondering where their time goes should look at how they manage emails, new research suggests. In a  survey of US chief financial officers (CFOs) conducted for recruitment firm Robert Half, 17 percent said the time they spend on work email is wasted.

Acaveo, a developer of file analysis software, has teamed up with Osterman Research to determine how organizations are managing their unstructured data growth. It claims that with ever higher storage costs and security risks associated with massive amounts of unstructured data stored by organizations, Information Governance (IG) initiatives are not gaining momentum as quickly as expected.
