Cisco To Cash In For Security

January 5, 2006: In a move that indicates the heightened value of anti-spam and anti-virus solutions, Cisco has announced it will fork out $US830 million for email and web security firm, IronPort Systems.

The purchase will be Cisco’s biggest monetary commitment to security and will reiterate the company’s move to reinvigorate its security platform. It will be the fifth largest acquisition in Cisco’s history and their biggest security purchase yet.

IronPort is just five years old but has already built up a steady reputation for its email and messaging security solutions for enterprises. The purchase will see IronPort products integrate in to Cisco’s already developed threat mitigation offerings.

Cisco says the acquisition will allow them to enhance the existing Cisco Self-Defending Network Framework while also allowing a more comprehensive range of products for enterprise customers.

IronPort’s best know products include ‘reputation filters’ that work to block spam through the examination of the sender’s record.
