Scalix Open Sources Its Enterprise Email, Messaging and Calendar

October 12th, 2006: Linux email specialist Scalix has released components of its email, messaging and calendar program to the open source community, sparking a 600% increase in downloads from its website.

In July the company announced that it would be releasing enterprise-class email and calendar services as open source products. This week it has come good on this promise, also including its popular Linux messaging software.

The components are part of the base code for all Scalix product editions, including its Community Edition, Small Business Edition and Enterprise Edition.

“Downloads of our software have increased sixfold since we announced our open source plans,” says Glenn Winokur, CEO of Scalix. “The community reaction has been phenomenal. Developers in organisations of all sizes have demonstrated how interested they are in integrating and extending our messaging platform. We welcome the active community involvement.”

The company plans to slowly release its source code to the open source community. In this phase, it has delivered source code for Scalix Messaging Services, Scalix Mobile Web Client, Scalix Search and Indexing Services, Scalix Installer and the localisation kit.

The company says that developers and Linux enthusiasts can now port Scalix software to new platforms, and can localise, customise, and extend the Scalix software.

To help boost this release, Scalix has also launched a set of resources to support the community, including a forum, a wiki, a knowledge base, a bug-tracking system, blogs and an FAQ.

Components can be downloaded now from Scalix’s web site.
