Eudora On The Open Road

Eudora On The Open Road

October 17th, 2006: The elder statesman of email clients will soon be joining the Mozilla Foundation and going-open source.

Alongside the release of its latest Mac version of the email client, Eudora developer Qualcomm has also announced that sometime in mid 2007 the software will be moving to the open source platform for continued development.

The client will be standing shoulder to shoulder with the popular Thunderbird, or rather be built on top of it with Eudora keeping some of its unique features while having others stripped out in favour of Thunderbird’s more up to date code.

Details are somewhat sketchy at the moment, however, with more and more popular programs moving to open-source momentum behind the larger community is growing rapidly.

“I’m excited for Eudora to be returning to the open-source community,” says Steve Dorner, vice president of technology for Qualcomm’s Eudora Group. “Using the Mozilla Thunderbird technology platform as a basis for future versions of Eudora will provide some key infrastructure that the existing versions lacked, such as a cross-platform code base and a world-class display engine. Making it open source will bring more developers to bear on Eudora than ever before.”
