Chase Chucks Out Credit Card Data

September 11th, 2006: 2.6 million Circuit City customers in the US have potentially had their personal information put at risk when Chase Card Services accidentally threw out tapes containing sensitive data.

Complying with US law, Chase Card Services announced on Friday that it is notifying 2.6 million current and former Circuit City credit card account holders that computer tapes containing their personal information were mistakenly identified before being thrown out.

Chase says that it is working closely with federal and local law enforcement, and believes that the tapes have already been compacted, destroyed and are buried in a landfill. It also says that the tapes were stored in a locked box, which may or may not offer comfort to its customers.
