EMC Adds Web Content Management To Documentum

September 15th, 2006: EMC is making moves on web content management again with its upcoming launch of Documentum Page Builder.

EMC says its software represents the next-generation of web content management (WCM) software, simplifying the creation, deployment and management of corporate websites. With Documentum Page builder, EMC is promising lower development costs and greater alignment between business objectives and customers.

EMC jumping into WCM could seem strange with so many other products out there, however, unlike front-end-orientated solutions such as Macromedia Dreamweaver, Page Builder is part of a unified suite giving it greater power to tap company resources and build sites complete with backend and content management systems.

"Historically, creating or modifying websites has proven to be an exhaustive and expensive undertaking, often requiring significant IT involvement," says Balaji Yelamanchili, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Content Management & Archiving at EMC. "Business users have little or no control over the layout, content and functionality, resulting in websites that lack a targeted customer experience and fail to meet business goals.”

Because it is part of EMC’s greater enterprise content management platform, ECM says Page Builder enables enterprises to substantially reduce costs, time to market, and improve overall web-based communication effectiveness. The company also says that Page Builder takes advantage of all content, process and repository services including multimedia services for managing and editing images and business process management for extending workflows beyond the content management system.

Documentum Page Builder offers a variety of easy-to-use features that go beyond traditional web content management technologies. They include:

  • A new graphical user interface (GUI) that improves design and site layout
  • A component-based approach that allows users to reuse static or dynamic components such as a header, footer or navigation to quickly assembly web pages
  • Easier site view and editing capabilities to reduce time spent searching for content
  • Support for Macromedia Dreamweaver templates for easier importing to and used by Web Publisher Page Builder
  • XML support of layout and content to provide schema validation, efficient parsing and processing, and rendering to multiple markup languages

EMC says that Documentum Page Builder will be available in Q4 this year with price varying by configuration.
