Pre-Owned Microsoft Licenses for Sale Legally

April 14th, 2006: But so far it's only available in the UK. But expect to see the business model in your region soon.

A U.K. company called discount-licensing.com has not only set up a legal business reselling bulk-purchased Microsoft software licenses, it's also managed to save a Vodafone reseller, "£7,000 to £8,000 on the cost of the Office 2003 licences."

Although the company does not resell any Windows operating system licenses, since November 2005 it has been making a healthy business making market in legal licenses for a range of Office products from 2000 up to 2003.

According to discount-licensing, it, "can identify specific insolvencies that have purchased software licences. And then work with Insolvency Practitioners such as Ernst & Young, PKF, Grant Thornton, Tenon that control the insolvent companies, as well as the software vendor (in this case Microsoft) in order to investigate the make up of the licence agreements and whether they are legally transferable.

The sale is completed using Microsoft's own transfer forms and once you (the new user) sign and return the documentation, the transfer will have been legally completed. Microsoft then retrospectively update their database to highlight the new owner." Cost savings of up to £8,000 in some instances have been claimed.

Discount's Noel Unwin maintains that his organisation has a good relationship with Microsoft mainly because, according to Unwin, "Even though a company would purchase the extra 50 licenses of Office 2000 licenses from us, they eventually will roll out the latest versions."
