SanDisk Brings In Security Specialists To Secure Flash
February 15, 2006: With a view to limit online fraud and theft of corporate data, SanDisk is partnering with security providers Verisign, RSA Security and Safend to improve security on all its USB flash drives and memory cards.
Verisign and RSA security will be embedding their identity protection technology and One-Time-Password (OTP) algorithms into SanDisk devices, while Safend will allow corporate users of SanDisk devices to backup, store, and transfer information within an organisation only.
To use identity protection, organisations must sign up to either VeriSign’s VIP service or RSA’s SecurID solution. After this, when SanDisk devices with embedded authentication capabilities are plugged it in, an automated process begins to associate them with an account. Once the association is formed, data cannot be copied on or off a device unless it is detected and validated.
"The growing popularity of USB flash drives can be a security headache for many enterprises," says Dor Skuler, vice president of business development at Safend. "Our partnership with SanDisk will make it easy for businesses to maintain a high level of security by distinguishing between the legitimate use of these devices and preventing any unauthorised access."
Safend does this by blocking physical ports and all company endpoints to all but authorised devices, which cannot be used outside of the organisation. It specifies which general classes of USB devices will work on our network, and even allows us to permit or deny specific USB devices based on vendor or device model.
SanDisk will also be pushing its TrustedFlash technology out to all of its devices. TrustedFlash combines 32-bit controller architecture with an embedded cryptographic engine and provides, SanDisk claims, real-time encryption and tamper-resistant security to keep stored data secure.
