Senator Coonan To Leave ICT Portfolio?

January 23, 2006: As Liberal senator Nick Minchin moves up the ladder to become the Leader of the Government in the Senate, his previous role as Deputy Leader in the Senate may be filled by the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan.

If the Senator is promoted, it is not known whether she will retain her ICT portfolio or not. Either way the move could indicate a shift in Australia’s ICT policy.

As reported by The Australian, the promotion would make Senator Coonan the first woman to be a member of the Liberal Party's leadership group and give her a position on the its federal executive.
