Remote recovery in real-time for Aussies

Aug 16, 2005: Aussie firms and organisations will soon be able to take advantage of a new service that allows them to have the data on their system recovered from a remote location, such as an airport lounge, for instance.

Ontrack Data has opened it first facility in Australia to provide localised, 24/7 service to Australian customers to address, what it sees as, the growing need for data recovery solutions in this country.

Todd Johnson, the vice president of data recovery operations for Ontrack Data Recovery, said that because Australia is one of the most heavily populated countries in terms of computer users, Australian businesses and home users need better options to address the crisis of computer data loss.

With more engineers and a full service recovery lab, Ontrack's expansion into Australia significantly enhances our ability to provide maximum data recovery in a minimal amount of time to our growing Australian customer base.

Adrian Briscoe, the Australia/New Zealand general manager for Ontrack, explained the advantages of features such as Remote Data Recovery, which uses patented technology and trained engineers to recover data straight from the customer's server, desktop or laptop through a modern or Internet connection.

"It allows our engineers to link to a computer system, be it a PC or laptop, anywhere via a very secure encrypted line. The user has to agree to let us in first, but once we are in, we can remotely search for the problem inside the hard drive, and fix with out tools that are downloaded onto the computer system.

"There is one example, when a lady could not access her presentation when she was in an airport. She contacted us, let us gain remote access to our system, and we recovered the data for her minutes before she got on the plane for an important meeting."

Briscoe said that it can fix partitions in the hardware, which might have become corrupted or are in need of repair. This system is already provided from America, but Briscoe claims that it is the first time that the service will be provided in real-time inside Australia.

"In addition, we provide clients with a full list of all the files on their system, with a green light marked next to a file that is o.k., and a red light marked next to a file that is corrupt or in need of fixing. This is provided through our VeriFile evaluation report."

Ontrack Data Recovery operates in 18 worldwide locations and it expects to have six staff in its Brisbane office by the end of the year.
