Capital ideas for records

The Records Management Association of Australasia (RMAA) is holding its 21st International Convention in Canberra from 12th-15th September 2004.

The Convention theme "From Concept to Reality" reflects the current necessities and demands now being placed on organisations in a volatile global and national economic climate.

Organisations increasingly require a working environment that allows rapid access to vital knowledge and authentic business information. This working environment must also enable organisations to respond to demands for compliance to standards for the management of their business information.

The RMAA Convention streams-Business Focus, Standards & Practices and The Human Factor-are designed to cover the varying aspects of today's challenges. Business Focus examines at a strategic level how organisations can better manage challenges through the implementation of planning frameworks and systems which enable rapid access to vital knowledge, information and authentic records to provide evidence of business transactions.

Standards & Practices looks, in a practical way, at how nternational and national standards and best practice for records management can help protect the interests of the stakeholders. The Human Factor will examine the fantasies about change and discuss strategies that can be used to handle the process and implementation of organisational cultural change whilst taking into consideration the people that make the change happen. The organisers have ensured a great range of speakers and topics. Keynote speakers of particular note include Luciana Duranti, Chair and Professor, Master of Archival Studies, University of British Columbia, Vancouver B.C. Canada and Lois Dickey, Vice President, Science Applications International Corporation, USA. Both are well respected in their field.

Attendees from across Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere use the event to update their information management skills and know-how, including new applications such as electronic document management, knowledge management, collaborative workplace, warehousing, Web and intranet, portal content management, plus e-commerce and emerging development platforms.

A vendor technology exhibition will be held in conjunction with the Convention. Delegates will be provided with the latest technology and data information to improve their business practice and training programs. Models for collaboration or research presentations will provide excellent networking opportunities for vendors and delegates to improve skills and knowledge.

According to the event organisers, the top five reasons to attend the RMAA National Convention are as follows:

1. Networking-400 plus peers located in one place at one time. This is a once a year opportunity to meet people with similar (or different) experiences to your own, share knowledge and gain invaluable insight from others who are actually working in your industry.

2. Exhibition-60 trade stands representing many of the leading vendors in the records and information management industry. See software, products and equipment demonstrated live, meet the representatives and discuss your needs first hand. This is the only 100 percent relevant trade show of its size held for the industry each year.

3. Program-The theme for this year's Convention is "from concept to reality" and covers the streams of business focus, standards and practices, and the human factor. There are 35 sessions made up of keynote, plenary, concurrent and workshop sessions. Of particular note are the keynote sessions of Dr Luciana Duranti (Canada) and Lois Dickey (USA).

4. Cost-At the members price of $950 and the non-members price of $1250 the RMAA National Convention represents excellent value for money. Delegates receive three full days of sessions, access to the trade displays, attendance at all social functions, multiple networking opportunities, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea on all 3 days, a delegate satchel and a copy of the proceedings. We ask you to compare this to some of the seminars and conferences available through the year which cost upward of $2500 for two days, without many of the additional features or advantages we offer.

5) Extra curricular activities-While in the nation's capital take advantage of the opportunity to broaden your knowledge. Visit the National Museum, National Library of Australia, National Archives, Australian War Memorial, Parliament House or Screensound Australia (National Sound and Screen Archive). There are plenty of interesting activities and places to visit in Canberra in September for both you and your family, not to mention the Conventions great Social Program.
